The Price of Flavor

Went to the grocery this morning and bought mostly produce.  I missed the farmers/flea market yesterday so can’t go with locally grown veggies until I can shop again this weekend.

I also wanted some Rosemary so I could try to make the bread like they serve at Macaroni Grill.  I could not believe how much dried herbs cost!  Now, mind you, I’m not exactly a culinary queen, but I do have a few spices in my cabinet.  I guess I never really thought about it before.  Even if I bought a plant (rather than starting from seed), I could purchase 3 – 4 young herb plants at the garden or grocery store for the cost of one small jar of dried Rosemary.

Since I began this journey and stared reading/researching about being more self-sustaining, I am seeing my food purchases in a whole new light!

Oh, good news – the local family that sells worm compost kits enthusiastically invited me to come and visit the worms and talk gardening.  I’m planning on taking my camera to document my visit and will share some pics here.  As I was preparing breakfast this morning I realized how many things I had just put in the trash will be put in the compost pile once I get it started.  Another positive to point out to my husband and kids, less trash to take out and fewer trash bags to purchase.
