My Journey…

Cindy

I am a wife and mother transplanted from Indiana to sunny SW Florida over 20 years ago.  My husband and I have two boys (15 and 18) whom we have always homeschooled.  I am the owner of Homeschooling From the Heart, which is our business/ministry to equip and encourage homeschool families.

I’ll be the first to admit that I’ve made my share of financial blunders over the years!  Homemaking hasn’t come easily for me, but I’ve gotten better at it with time.  My house is basically clean and my family gets fed (although convenience meals and eating out are the staples of our diet).

I now find myself having an almost-empty-nest, yet determined to continue to plan, learn new homemaking skills, and also to strengthen my walk with my Savior.  After all, it is He who ultimately sustains me and carries me through each day.  I want to know more of Him and His wonderful ways!

My journey “home” and toward a life of self-sufficiency has had many ups and downs.  I’m enjoying learning many new skills and we are pressing on toward preparing for whatever the future holds.  There is much uncertainty all around, but we rest in our faith in God.  He has blessed us with so much and I want to be a good steward of all we have.  We all have the same number of hours in the day, but it is important to redeem the time, to make the most of our minutes.  As I learn new skills and practice more frugality and voluntary simplicity, I realize that “simple” doesn’t necessarily mean “easy” :-)

Of course, I’m not the only one trying to get “back to basics”.  The internet and nightly news is filled with stories of urban and suburbanites tearing up there lawns to make gardens, looking to conserve energy, and more.  We are so tied to the grocery store – if there is a food shortage, will we have the tools and know how to survive on our own, or will be at the mercy of the government?  I am a firm believer in personal responsibility, so it is with that mind set I have started on my “Journey to Simplicity.”

Amen, sister! We moved to a farm about 5 years ago, and are trying to be self sufficient – but still are fighting our McDonalds addiction! I will check back frequently, thanks for posting your journey.

Wow! Your story is remarkably similar to ours. We have definitely felt the pull of the Holy Spirit urging us to be more self-sufficient. We know that the Lord will provide, but we’re not so foolish to think that we won’t have to work for it. LOL I am enjoying your blog so much! Thank you for sharing your experiences with us.
